You can add screenwriting to the resume of multitalented Sharron Matthews.<\/p>\n

The Hamilton native has helped pen an episode of CBC\u2019s \u201cFrankie Drake Mysteries\u201d in which she co-stars as pathologist, Flo Chakowitz.<\/p>\n

She\u2019s also writing an animated show with her costar Rebecca Liddiard, who plays police morality officer, Mary Shaw, and writer Carmen Albano. It\u2019s called \u201cMary and Flo: On the Go!\u201d<\/p>\n

Matthews has been in showbiz for more than 30 years, appearing in more than two dozen movies and TV shows like \u201cMean Girls\u201d (2004), and TVO\/PBS\u2019s \u201cODD Squad\u201d (2014-2016). Known also for her singing \u2014 she was proclaimed Toronto\u2019s cabaret queen a decade ago \u2014 she has appeared in musicals like \u201cShowboat,\u201d and \u201cLes Miserables,\u201d plus the TV show \u201cCanada Sings.\u201d<\/div>\n

Matthews, 52, admits one of the reasons she wanted to write an episode for the show was to afford her character a chance to sing. Called \u201cLife is a Cabaret,\u201d the episode involves Frankie (Lauren Lee Smith) and Flo investigating a murder linked to an underground drag club in 1920s Toronto. \u201cFrankie Drake Mysteries\u201d is now in its fourth season and is on CBC at 9 p.m. Monday.<\/p>\n

Flo gets a chance to belt out two songs, although her character initially begs off when asked to sing by saying she hasn\u2019t \u201csung since I was kicked out of choir in Catholic school.\u201d (Matthews is a graduate of Hill Park Secondary School and Eastmount Park Elementary School). The episode aired Feb. 15, but can be streamed on CBC Gem.<\/div>\n

Matthews, who lives in Toronto, said she approached show writer Keri Ferencz in December 2019 to see if she was interested in writing an episode with her. She loved the way Ferencz wrote lines and scenes for her character.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve written all of my own (cabaret) shows, but screenwriting is a different beat,\u201d said Matthews.<\/div>\n
\n

For one thing, she notes the length of an episode \u2014 42 minutes. Within that time frame, she says you have to provide clues for the viewers and let them meet the suspects and the killer.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery genre of writing has its own fence posts,\u201d Matthews said.<\/p>\n

Plus, there is usually a B story \u2014 the two other characters in the show, Trudy Clarke (Chantel Riley) and Mary investigate an insurance fraud.<\/p>\n

Also, this show had music, which Matthews noted, \u201ctakes away dialogue.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI remember at one point we had 80 pages,\u201d she said. \u201cWe had to wheedle it down to 62 pages. You write the story you really want and then you have to pare it down. It was a really amazing process.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

She was afraid to watch it at first, but got a kick out of seeing people she knows speak lines she had written. One of the people in the episode was guest star Thom Allison, a singer who Matthews calls \u201ca soulmate.\u201d<\/p>\n

The COVID-19 pandemic impacted the writing of the show, in that it delayed production and gave Matthews and Ferencz more time to write it. They began in April and had their first draft in July.<\/p>\n

The show was filmed with all kinds of safety protocols during the fall, including regular testing and the constant wearing of masks. Matthews caused filming of a scene to stop once when she was surprised an actor had a beard under his mask.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cI think my face blanched, \u2018Oh my God, you have a beard,\u2019\u201d she laughed.<\/div>\n

Matthews would like to write another episode and has joined the Writer\u2019s Guild of Canada. \u201cI\u2019ve always loved writing. Singing was my release. Writing has been a great joy for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Matthews still has family in Hamilton. Her mother and a sister live on Hamilton Mountain and another sister lives in Dundas. Her father died in 1970.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrankie Drake Mysteries\u201d shoots often in Hamilton and Matthews talks up the town to others. It has filmed at such places as Gage Park, Dundurn Castle and the Scottish Rite.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love shooting there,\u201d adds Matthews. \u201cI\u2019m always very proud. Our town is great.\u201d<\/p>\n

If you\u2019ve watched \u201cFrankie Drake Mysteries\u201d on CBC you know how delightful the\u00a0characters<\/a>\u00a0of morgue attendant Flo Chakowitz and morality officer Mary Shaw are, especially when they team up to help Frankie solve crimes in 1920s Toronto.<\/p>\n

Rebecca Liddiard (Mary) and Sharron Matthews (Flo) will reprise their roles in \u201cMary and Flo: On the Go!\u201d in which their animated avatars travel the world encountering famous women and men of the 1920s. They co-created the show with Carmen Albano (\u201cDetention Adventure\u201d).<\/p>\n

\u00a0It\u2019s one of four series green-lighted by Shaftesbury Kids, including a live-action spinoff of the comedy \u201cLife With Derek\u201d called \u201cLife With Luca,\u201d from Daphne Ballon and Jeff Biederman of \u201cDerek.\u201d<\/div>\n

Also on the slate are \u201cMiikshi,\u201d from Lindsay and Justin Lee, a live-action puppet series about a female sheep scientist who is saving the world; and \u201cStinky Science,\u201d which explores the science behind why things smell with characters from the books by Edward Kay, illustrated by Mike Shiell.<\/p>\n

Sharron Matthews returns to Calgary with her Lunchbox Theatre show Superstar!<\/figure>\n

Sharron Matthews, Canada\u2019s premiere cabaret artist, is making a whistlestop return to Calgary this month with both a kid-friendly show and an adult-friendly show.<\/p>\n

Last year, Matthews wowed Lunchbox Theatre audiences with her autobiographical show Girl Crush, which was about dealing with image issues, bullying and finding her mojo through music and merriment. It earned Matthews two Betty Mitchell Award nominations and an enthusiastic local fan base; in return, she gained a love for our city and theatre community.<\/p>\n

This explains why Matthews agreed to return with her internationally acclaimed cabaret show Superstar! as a fundraiser for Lunchbox. She will be performing April 12 and 13 at Lunchbox at 9:30 p.m. Tickets for these shows are $35 and can be reserved at lunchboxtheatre.com.<\/p>\n

While she was performing Girl Crush last March, StoryBook Theatre\u2019s artistic director JP Thibodeau learned Matthews has a family show called Invincible You, Invincible Me, which also deals with bullying, negative self-image and anxiety, and quickly booked her for his current season.<\/p>\n

Invincible You, Invincible Me will run in the Vertigo Studio Theatre April 6-8 and three of the six shows have only a handful of tickets remaining. You can book seats for Invincible You, Invincible Me at storybooktheatre.org.<\/p>\n

Internationally, Matthews is known as the Canadian Goddess of Cabaret and has been named best cabaret performer by critics and magazines on both sides of the Atlantic. She has taken her show Superstar! as far afield as Edinburgh, London and South Africa, where she played to standing room only crowds.<\/p>\n

\u201cI started working on Superstar! back in 2005. Through the cabarets I had been doing, I had amassed a catalogue of almost 100 songs. I was looking to create a format where I could whittle that down to 50, polish them and then use different ones for different occasions,\u201d says Matthews.<\/p>\n

\u201cGirl Crush is a real message show. Superstar! is a let yourself go and have fun show.\u201d<\/p>\n

She admits Superstar! is filled with nostalgia, but quickly adds \u201cnot the mothball, smelly kind of nostalgia. The really fun kind. I do all the parts of Bohemian Rhapsody by myself. That kind of thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Matthews says that, in the version of Superstar! she will be performing at Lunchbox\u2019s fundraiser, she\u2019ll be doing a tribute to prom nights and those last-song sets of the evening.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do the kind of songs typically played at proms and then I do the set I think they should do which means a lot of Bee Gees.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though she has done her share of musical theatre, Matthews says there isn\u2019t a set of big songs from Broadway shows, but then adds \u201cthat doesn\u2019t mean Superstar! doesn\u2019t have a musical theatre feel to it. I give popular songs a musical theatre feel.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn a show in Edinburgh, I did my version of the Supreme\u2019s Stop in the Name of Love. After the show, a little 83-year-old woman came up and asked what Broadway show that number came from.\u201d<\/p>\n

Matthews says she will do one of her most requested sets in the Lunchbox show, which is a disco number.<\/p>\n

\u201cI talk about falling in love with a DJ in a New York nightclub and then tell our love story using 35 disco numbers. Some of the songs will only have a few lyrics but people will know them instantly.\u201d<\/p>\n

Matthews says the youth show Invincible You, Invincible Me actually grew out of her cabaret show.<\/p>\n

\u201cFive years ago, Allen MacInnis at Young Peoples Theatre in Toronto encouraged me to write a show for children. I was so used to doing adult shows with adult themes I didn\u2019t know if I could adapt my style for children.<\/p>\n

\u201cAllen said for me just to do what I knew best and take out the cursing, so I created a grown-ups show for kids. It\u2019s a very engaged performance. I\u2019m always talking to and with the kids, which means each show is unique to that audience.\u201d<\/p>\n

Invincible You, Invincible Me has become so popular that Matthews has decided to teach the show to a couple of young artists who can take it to all the schools requesting visits.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy Invincible You, Invincible Me shows for StoryBook Theatre may be the last ones I do personally. When I\u2019m back in Toronto, I will begin incorporating my new artists into my performances and then let them take the show out on their own.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Frankie Drake Mysteries<\/i> may be set in 1920s Toronto, but its representation of female characters is far from out-dated. Frankie Drake (Lauren Lee Smith) and Trudy Clarke (Chantel Riley) are both smart, tough, ambitious, complicated women, so it comes as no surprise that the women they choose to work with are just as nuanced.<\/p>\n

Enter Flo, played by actress and cabaret star Sharron Matthews, a morgue attendant with a no-holds-barred attitude. \u201cShe\u2019s sassy, and she\u2019s a bit fearless,\u201d says Matthews to The TV Junkies<\/i> when asked how she infuses her cabaret flair into the character.<\/p>\n

In fact, it\u2019s Matthews\u2019 cabaret background that offered real insight into how she could relate to Flo. \u201cI didn\u2019t start cabaret in earnest until I was 35 years old,\u201d says Matthews. \u201cI already had a full theatre, TV and film career before I dedicated myself to it because I was so passionate about it. With Flo, she didn\u2019t start going to medical school until she was in her 40s, because her husband died in the war. So I get someone later in life finding a new passion and dedicating themselves to it fully.\u201d<\/p>\n

The process of getting the role of Flo wasn\u2019t easy for Matthews. When her agent approached her about the part Matthews was in New York City performing her show Girl Crush<\/i> at 54 Below. When Matthews said she didn\u2019t have time, her agent insisted she at least read the part. \u201cSome characters you read and you go, \u2018I can play that.\u2019 Then there are some characters you read and say, \u2018Oh, that\u2019s me,\u2019\u201d she reveals. \u201cI literally put my suitcase in the middle of the smallest hotel room in the world, I put a toaster container on top of it, I leaned my iPhone on it, and did a self-tape.\u201d<\/p>\n

She was still in New York City when the producers called back asking her to fly to Toronto to read for Flo. Determined to make it work, Matthews\u2019 agent recorded a clip from a recent guest role she\u2019d filmed in the series Taken<\/i> and sent it to the producers. After that, the role was hers. \u201cI think it was meant to be,\u201d says Matthews.<\/p>\n

As viewers, we\u2019re still getting to know Flo, as much of her story this season has been about getting out into the world to join in on the adventure. \u201cIt felt like Frankie was drawing Flo out of the morgue and out of mourning,\u201d says Matthews. \u201cShe decided she had another passion, but that passion also led her to being very singular and alone. Frankie is dragging her into life, she\u2019s being pulled into more and more friendships.\u201d<\/p>\n

In \u201cOut of Focus,\u201d Flo had a chance to bond with Mary (Rebecca Liddiard), and offer some frank advice about her personal life while they searched for a missing dead body. It became a defining moment for Flo in the series. \u201cWhat you learn about Flo, you see through her actions, and through the way she talks to Mary,\u201d says Matthews. \u201cWe discovered this great comedic partnership. They\u2019re very different, but they really fit together. I think they saw that and they wrote a little bit more in the episode for us too.\u201d<\/p>\n

Matthews says the chemistry between Flo and Mary was something they discovered near the end of shooting Season 1, but it\u2019s something she hopes they can explore further if the series is renewed for a second season.<\/p>\n

As for this week\u2019s episode, \u201cThe Pilot\u201d, expect to see Flo both in and out of the morgue as she helps Frankie solve a case around an attempted child kidnapping.<\/p>\n

Life might be a cabaret, old chums, but how to make that musical form appealing for young theatregoers? Sharron Matthews knows a little bit of Taylor Swift and Bruno Mars certainly doesn\u2019t hurt.<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The well-known local actress and musical thespian is currently staging Unapologetically Me<\/em>: Sharron\u2019s Cabaret for Kids,<\/em> a rocking musical show for kids aged 9 to11, in which she tells part of her own life story in an interactive show that touches on anxiety, body shaming and being yourself.<\/h3>\n

At Thursday morning\u2019s performance, the kids from Withrow Avenue Junior Public School were into it, dancing and singing throughout, especially when they heard some familiar chords.<\/h3>\n

\u201cKids are the most challenging audience I\u2019ve ever performed for, because you can\u2019t stop for a second,\u201d says Matthews, a pillar of the local cabaret scene and a 20-year veteran of the form. \u201cWhat kids know is about a year and a half long, and then it all changes, but luckily with \u2018Uptown Funk\u2019 and Taylor Swift, those are evergreen songs for them.<\/h3>\n

\u201cThere has never been (another) audience where as soon as I start Taylor Swift or \u2018Uptown Funk,\u2019 where they go \u2018What?\u2019 and they just start singing, which is exactly what I\u2019m looking for.\u201d<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n

Matthews, who is backed by musicians Jason Chesworth on guitar and Jamie Drake on percussion, says that this show has been workshopped for three years and went through many iterations before this finished product.<\/h3>\n

She was approached by the theatre\u2019s artistic director, Allen MacInnis, who was a fan of her more adult-themed cabaret, to try to come up with a show for this audience.<\/h3>\n

\u201cWhen he said, \u2018What about cabaret for kids?\u2019 I said, \u2018I don\u2019t know, I just don\u2019t know how it\u2019s going to mix.\u2019 And he said the most important thing you can do is that it\u2019s interactive, it\u2019s malleable in the moment and that the kids are being heard.\u201d<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n

The result is a show where Matthews gets them on side by telling them a story that starts with her first day at school and picking a few students in the audience to get the conversation rolling. She then touches on issues like bullying, body shaming and her own struggle with anxiety. There are some points where she asks for call and responses and, because of that, she knows she just has to go with the flow.<\/h3>\n

\u201cYou have to be ready and that\u2019s the challenge with something like this. You have to be open for just about anything. If you\u2019re going to ask them to be involved, you have to be open to every kind of involved,\u201d she says.<\/h3>\n

She credits her crack backing band and collaborators, who know from her cues when to slow it down to let a little one be heard, or perhaps vamp away with a drum fill to keep the show moving. That said, there are going to be times when the show gets hijacked by someone who just has to say something.<\/h3>\n

\u201cFor then, you just have to make sure that they feel like they are being heard,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd then get back on track.\u201d<\/h3>\n

The show runs until Oct. 21 here and then moves on to Calgary, and after that she plans to stage it concurrently with some of her other upcoming \u201cgrown-up\u201d cabaret tours.<\/h3>\n

And the truth is, she says, when it comes to cabaret, there really isn\u2019t much difference between the old chums and the younger audience.<\/h3>\n

\u201cThe thing is everyone asks me how different it is and the only difference is that I take out the swears,\u201d Matthews says. \u201cI don\u2019t have kids, so I talk to kids like I talk to an adult, mostly. I think that\u2019s what makes it work. I really do just talk to them the way I do to adults \u2014 who have been drinking.\u201d<\/h3>\n

Though she listens to today\u2019s pop tunes religiously, the cabaret dynamo Sharron Matthews has a decided taste for 1980s radio fare. Her one-woman show, Girl Crush<\/em>, playing at the High Park Amphitheatre on Monday, is plush with the melodic nostalgia of Kim Carnes, the Police, Rick Springfield and Cyndi Lauper, along with the other-era music of Blondie and Beyonc\u00e9. The Globe asked the performer what else she\u2019s crushing on lately.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

What she\u2019s listening to:<\/strong> \u201cBecause of my cabaret work, I spend a lot of time listening to new popular music. I download the top 20 songs every week and listen to them a couple of times to happen upon something that is inspiring to put into a new piece. But lately I have been wrapped up in a musical theatre cast album. I have listened to Dear Evan Hansen<\/em> at least 100 times. It has a wonderful score \u2013 composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul not only won the Tony Award for this show but also won the Oscar this year for their work on La La Land<\/em> \u2013 as well as hot-button content and wonderful performers. I dare you not to love it.\u201d<\/p>\n

What she just read:<\/strong> \u201cSo, I travel a lot and I love listening to books on tape. Last year, I was travelling to Sudbury to shoot a horror movie \u2013 bucket list item, people, and I played a cop, too, which was magical \u2013 and I thought, \u2018Ya know, I am going to download a scary book that I love, to get me in the mood.\u2019 I bought Stephen King\u2019s The Stand,<\/em> my favourite of his novels. (Judge at will, but that dude knows how to tell a story, and I love him.) I have to say, driving the roads of Northern Ontario in the dark and listening to this post-apocalyptic tale scared the bejesus out of me. The story is epic and enthralling.\u201d<\/p>\n

What she\u2019s looking forward to:<\/strong> \u201cOkay, I know it is far off, but I really am looking forward to the arrival of Come From Away<\/em> to Toronto. I have been trying and trying to see it (both here and in New York) and it just has not panned out. But in February, 2018, it is coming back to the Royal Alex. It\u2019s one of my favourite theatres; I did Les Miserables<\/em> there when I was 21 years old. And now my husband, George Masswohl, will be in it! So, I am kind of glad that I have not seen it yet, because the first time I see it will be with him on the stage. Life works out sometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n
